Olkaria Geothermal Power Plants
KenGen operates several geothermal power plants in the Olkaria area, including Olkaria I, Olkaria II, Olkaria IV, Olkaria V, and Olkaria I Unit 4 & 5. These plants collectively have a generation capacity of 799 MW
Olkaria VII Geothermal Power Plant
One of the latest additions to the Olkaria Project is the Olkaria VII Geothermal Power Plant, which is expected to have a capacity of 80.3 MW. The project is part of KenGen’s plan to add 3,000 MW of renewable energy to the national grid over the next decade
Upgrading Olkaria I
KenGen has also awarded a contract to upgrade the oldest geothermal power plant in Olkaria, Olkaria I, to increase its output from 45 MW to 63 MW. This renovation aims to enhance the plant’s operational efficiency and align with Kenya’s Vision 2030 initiative for a transition to 100% green energy.
Environmental and Economic Impact
The Olkaria Project plays a crucial role in stabilizing Kenya’s power supply and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Geothermal energy is a cost-effective and sustainable source of baseload power for the country
